Hundreds gathered on Sunday, June 24, at the Marcelino Serna Port of Entry in Tornillo, Texas, for the second time within a week to protest the separation of immigrant children from their parents.
Voto Latino, an organization dedicated to fostering Latino leadership, organized Sunday’s #EndFamilyDetention rally; which brought together prominent public figures such as former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro and Mexican-American civil rights activist Dolores Huerta.
Despite President Trump’s executive order to stop the separation of immigrant families seeking asylum — which was signed on June 20 — groups opposing the policies continue to organize rallies and say they will continue to do so until the immigrant families are reunited.
There is still little to no details on how and when the families will be reunited. Over 2,000 children have been separated from their families since May, and there are plans for more children to be taken to the Tornillo “tent city” within the coming months.
