“Jaws” (1975)
One of the granddaddies of them all is the sea horror film of “Jaws.” Dating back to its 1975 release, this is one of Steven Spielberg’s best directed films. The thriller follows the story of a town that receives terrible news of a shark killing a young woman in the sea. Police chief Martin Brody insists that they close the beach, but mayor Larry Vaughn wants them to keep it open in hopes for the revenue of the tourist-driven town to stay afloat. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper and captain Quint help Brody try to get the shark, which creates a vicious battle between men versus shark.
“The Babadook” (2014)
“The Babadook” has the reputation of a big horror hit on Netflix. It entirely blew up as soon as it was put on the streaming site. The low-budget, independent film gained high critical acclaim for its interesting plot and terrifying tale. “The Babadook” tells the story about a distressed widow who finds out that her son is telling the truth about a monster that is haunting them beyond the pages of a children’s book. It’s a must-see horror film on Netflix.
“Children of the Corn” (1984)
What was once a Stephen King horror sensation turned into a full-length movie known as “Children of the Corn.” The 80’s thriller comes off often cheesy, but it is something to watch for horror movie aficionados. The movie takes place when physician Burt Stanton and his girlfriend Vicky move for a new job. On their trip they encounter a dead body on the road. After they try searching for help, the couple goes into a town comprised of entirely children. They learn that the kids are followers of sinister young preacher Isaac Chroner. They are then left to evade the children who want their bodies for a sacrifice.
“It Follows” (2014)
One of the top independent horror films in recent times, “It Follows,” found its way into the Netflix scene as a truly a scary film that has to be watched this season. The movie starts with Jay, a teenager with no regrets, who sleeps with her new boyfriend Hugh for the first time. After intercourse, she discovers that Hugh actual passed on a deadly curse to her via sexual intercourse. Jay finds out that people who are dead will creep to her as a stranger. Her and her friends are left to run away from these dead walkers and stay alive.
“V/H/S” (2012)
“V/H/S” is of the creepiest set of stories that one could watch in one sitting. It starts with a group of burglars rushing into a house in search of a rare VHS tape. It turns out that the house is home to a dead body, a bunch of old TV’s and a bunch of VHS tapes. When they put in different VHS tapes and watch them, gruesome tales come up. Each short story is about 20 minutes and is told through the cryptic videos
“The Sixth Sense” (1999)
“The Sixth Sense” is a M. Night Shyamalan classic that tells a horror tale with an interesting twist. This movie isn’t all about the horror, but more about a mystery tale. It follows Cole Sear, a young boy, who is haunted by ghosts that only he can see. He doesn’t tell anyone but his psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe, who is played by Bruce Willis. When Crowe tries to help the boy rid his nature of seeing the supernatural, both embark on an unexplainable experience.
