The El Paso Chihuahuas held a press conference on Thursday afternoon at Southwest university park to announce that the team has been chosen to host the 2019 Triple-A All-Star Game between the best players from the Triple-A International League and the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, of which the Chihuahuas are members and the 2016 champions. The festivities will also feature a home run derby, traditionally the Monday night before the Wednesday night baseball game. The date for the game has not been announced yet and depends on the announcement of the Major League Baseball All-Star game’s scheduled date.
“The Triple-A All-Star Game is a marquee event for all of Minor League Baseball,” said Minor League Baseball’s President and CEO Pat O’Conner prior to the press conference beginning.
O’Conner was on hand for the announcement, along with Randy Mobley, president of the International League and Branch Rickey, president of the Pacific Coast League. O’Conner spoke highly of the El Paso area, the Chihuahuas ownership, fans and stadium.
“I can think of no better venue to play this game than in El Paso,” said O’Conner.
In the past, the Triple-A All-Star game has featured players such as Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones, Pedro Martinez and Mike Piazza. In the teams’ three year history, the Chihuahuas have had five players named to the PCL All-Star team, three during the 2016 championship season—2014: Jonathan Galvez (3B), 2015: Cody Decker (1B) and 2016: Carlos Asuaje (2B), Casey McElroy (SS), Hunter Renfroe (RF).
As was the case in 2015 when the Chihuahuas hosted the Triple-A National Championship, tickets for the Triple-A All-Star Game will be offered to season ticket holders first.
