High energy was served as UTEP tennis (2-1) valiantly fought against Weber State (0-6) Feb. 6 at the El Paso Tennis Club.
The Miners secured two of the three doubles matches before moving on to singles where UTEP continued to dominate, winning the overall match.
UTEP’s doubles fought through the sun and sweat as senior Zuzanna Szczepanska and junior Candice Bernier triumphed against Weber State’s junior Jessica Hill and freshman Aleks Bozinovska 6-3 in the No.1 match.
In the No.2 match, sophomore Sydney Schnell and freshman Alicia Morales secured Weber State’s only win over UTEP’s senior Carlotta Mencaglia and sophomore Hanna Telzynska, 6-2.
UTEP’s junior Wendy Zhang and sophomore DeCora Antoine, were in high spirits as they defeated senior Cindy Li and sophomore Savannah Johnson in the No. 3 match, 6-4.
“It’s competitive, its strength [and] power, if they keep that up, they have a chance,” UTEP tennis fan Raul Becerra, said.
That strength and power continued throughout singles, where UTEP fought for the winning momentum.
UTEP’s Mencaglia defeated WSU’s Schnell 6-2, 3-0, retired. Bernier conquered Li 6-3, 6-2.
The last finished match, Antoine dominated over Bozinovska 6-3, 6-1.
“We played with a lot of determination while sticking to our game plan and closing out the match,” UTEP tennis Head Coach Ivan Fernandez told UTEP athletics.
Due to the clinch match, the Miners secured their victory after taking the first set in two of the other three matches. Weber State 0-6, UTEP 2-1.
The Miners ended the week with another win on its record against The University of Texas at Permian Basin, 5-0, on Feb. 9.
UTEP will play its fifth home game on Feb. 14, against Mountain West competitor The University of New Mexico.
