UTEP women’s basketball (4-1, 0-0 Conference USA) set off for their first away game of the season against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (3-3, 0-0 Southland Conference).
The Miners restarted their winning streak, returning home victorious 64-53 against the Islanders. This win also marked Head Coach Keitha Adams’ 300th win as part of the UTEP women’s basketball program.
The first half started off slowly for both teams with the Islanders putting up a tough fight. Still the Miners were able to put up a strong defense, ending the first quarter leading by three points 16-13 extending it slightly to a four-point lead by the end of second quarter, 27-23.
Sophomore forward Luisa Vydrova led the team offensively with eight points and five rebounds in the first quarter and senior guard Delma Zita with six assists in the first half.
UTEP shot 32% from the field, 23% from the three-point range, and 50% from the free-throw line along with 28 rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.
The Miners picked up the pace in the third quarter, pulling away from the Islanders and creating an 11-point lead dominating offensively with Vydrova scoring another eight points and junior guard Portia Adams scoring seven points.
The Miners maintained this lead throughout the rest of the game, shooting 35% of their shots from outside the arc, 67% from the charity-stripe and 39% from the floor.
The Islanders were able to earn more steals (11-6) and blocks (7-0) but the Miners held on to their advantage with rebounds (48-37) and assists (17-11).
Senior guard Ivane Tensaie put up 13 points while Adams put up 12 points and four assists, Zita with nine assists and Vydrova dominated putting up a total of 18 points and 12 rebounds.
“It was a great first road win,” said Head Coach Adams. “I thought our defense set the tone in the first half, and in the second our team came together more offensively. It was a loud atmosphere to play in, and I think that’s good experience for this young team. Now it’s time to get back to El Paso and get ready for a really good BYU team.”
Miner fans can look forward to the next UTEP women’s basketball home game Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Don Haskins Center against the Birmingham Young University (BYU) Cougars (5-1, 0-0 Big 12 Conference).
