Every year the nation calls for a moment in time to reflect, appreciate and honor those who served in the U.S. military. Nov. 11 is a day dedicated to recognizing veterans who were affiliated with the military, as well as those currently serving in uniform.
In true El Paso fashion, various celebrations throughout the weekend took place leading up to the holiday on Nov. 11.
On Nov. 9, El Paso held its annual Veteran’s Day parade in the heart of downtown showcasing hundreds of individuals who are currently in service and even some patriotic floats that honor veterans.
The downtown parade was hosted by the United American Veterans Organization. Starting off early at 10 a.m. locals showed up to view the parade and show their patriotism for those in duty.
Rafael Ramirez Jr. attended the event and shared that he served in 1970 through 1973. Ramirez said he was happy to be there as he reflects on his own time being in service and how he felt as the community came together to honor veterans.
“That makes me feel real good cause everyone is here supporting a veteran,” said Ramirez.
Local couple Eli and Monica Castro are both veterans who showed up to support those who are currently in service.
“We just want to give our tribute to the parade, the kids, the older people, all of them,” said Eli Castro.
Monica Castro said being a part of the military gave her a new, welcoming community to be a part of.
“Being in the military, you know creates a new family and I feel it is important I show my appreciation, so of course I came out here to support.” said Monica Castro.
Monica Castro also shared that being at the parade makes her feel patriotic and is reminiscent of the time she was on active duty. Monica Castro served from 1998 to 2003, and Eli Castro served during 1997 through 2005.
The parade consisted of bikers, military grade vehicles, veterans waving to the crowd and organizations from various JROTC programs in the community.
As the parade ended, the audience continued to cheer, “Thank you for your service,” to those marching in the parade and to fellow bystanders as well. Closing out the chilly morning, families left with a sense of pride and gratitude for individuals who sacrificed their time for the nation’s freedom.
