The day to elect the 47th president of the United States and decide the future of our nation has finally arrived. Here is everything you need to know to make the most out of your vote.
First, be sure to check your voter registration status. The last day to register to vote in Texas was Oct. 7, meaning that there is no on the spot registration. If you’re not sure whether you’re registered to vote, you can check using the following link: https://epcountyvotes.com/voter-information/dashboard
Once your voting status is confirmed, track down any polling station to cast a ballot. It isn’t hard, especially when considering that there’s a voting station in UTEP’s Union East building. If on campus voting is difficult, there will be polling stations all across the city at schools, recreation centers and more.
The most important factor that can be hard to control is timing. Polls open at 7 a.m and close at 7 p.m. To prevent any traffic issues or late alarms, head out early to go vote.
When heading out to cast your vote, a valid piece of identification is required. There’s no need to worry about one specific ID, as all the following are accepted forms of identification:
A Texas Driver’s License (issued by DPS), a Texas election ID certificate, a Texas personal ID card, a Texas handgun license, a US military ID with photograph, a US citizenship certificate with photograph (does not need to be current), and a US passport (book or card).
Once you vote, that does not mean the night is over. If there are friends and family who are hesitant to cast a ballot, motivate them to do so. It is also crucial to follow Election Day as it unfolds in real time. This can range from reading headlines, following free live streams from credible news stations, or heading to Election Day Watch Party at the Thomas River Conference Center (TRCC), Union East Building. The party starts at 8 a.m. and is hosted by UTEP SELC and Union Services.
