Local fans came together on Oct. 10 to not only watch the game but celebrate the birthday of “Ozzy” the Locomotive mascot.
San Antonio FC is currently 9th in the United Soccer League (USL) Western Conference, with the Locomotive lingering at the bottom of the league in 12th.
Within the first 35 minutes of the game, both teams went back and forth bringing pressure on from both sides, however, the half ended with a 0-0 score.
Coming out of halftime, San Antonio’s Jake LaCava scored a goal in the 52nd minute, followed by Luis Solignac scoring a few minutes later in the 62nd minute.
At the 82nd minute, Locomotive’s Kendall Burks made a swift goal, bringing life to the Southwest crowd.
Then with only 2 minutes left in the game, another goal was scored and the crowd erupted in unison, “GOALLLLLL” after Locomotive Miles Lyon tied the score.
With a score of 2-2 heading into overtime, everyone was on the edge of their seats. All momentum had shifted to the hometown underdogs.
Both teams had a competitive chip of resentment and relentless energy straight off the tipoff. Great defense was played from both sides not giving any team a chance at a walk-off winner.
The Locomotive had pushed the rock into San Antonio territory coming out of an inbound pass. With everyone on their feet, the pass was executed well bouncing off a player towards the goal.
With outstretched arms, the Locomotives goalie put his body on the line for an incredible save. The Locomotives would have 2 more opportunities to put it in till the last seconds, but none of those attempts were close.
The El Paso Locomotives’ next game will be against Orange County FC on Oct. 16 at Southwest University Park.
