The UTEP track and field team kicked off its season Saturday, Dec. 4 at Boston University for the Sharon Colyear-Danville. The Miners had three members of the track and field team compete at the season opener, each one setting personal records.
Graduate student distance runner Daniel Bernal competed in his first indoor track and field event with UTEP after transferring from Furman University. While at Furman, Bernal set a personal best of 14:05.38 in the 5000-meter run at the Husky Classic. At the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville, Bernal competed in the 5000-meter run recording a time of 13:52.79 surpassing his previous record from his time at Furman.
Junior distance runner Ruth Jerubet competed in the 5000-meter run at the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville after a groundbreaking 2022 cross country season. During the 2022 indoor track season Jerubet competed at the Conference USA (C-USA) championships where she ran a personal best of 16:59.43 in the 5000-meter run. While at the Boston University track and field meet Jerubet recorded a time of 16:55.47 breaking her previous record from the C-USA Indoor championships.
Sophomore distance runner Victor Kibiego is coming off an exceptional cross-country season. During the cross-country season, Kibiego competed at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship. Kibiego recorded a personal record of 14:22.90 at the C-USA in the 5000-meter run where he placed fourth overall. At the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville meet Kibiego set a time of 14:08.51 in the 5000-meter run, breaking his previous time from the C-USA Indoor track and field championships.
UTEP track and field will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 14 for the Texas Tech Corky Classic.
