UTEP Athletics Fan Council is a group of hardcore UTEP fans put together to cheer on the Miners at every game.
The Fan Council is comprised of UTEP Alumni and parents of UTEP students to support UTEP sports and discuss issues that may be facing the Athletics department. The Fan Council serves as an advocate for all Miner fans and formally engages with the athletic department.
UTEP’s Fan Council mission statement reads: “The UTEP Fan Council (FC) will serve as a conduit through which Miner fans can formally engage the athletic department with ideas, questions and feedback. In addition, the FC will serve as advocates to Miner fans, helping address the myriad of complex issues facing today’s Division I Athletic Department.”
Elizabeth Aveytia is no stranger to UTEP Athletics, as she is currently serving for the Fan Council during the 2021-2022 season. Aveytia is a lifelong resident of El Paso; she and her family were season ticket holders for UTEP football and would attend basketball games.
“As a fan of Miner Athletics, it has been a wonderful experience to be a part of the UTEP Fan Council; I have learned so much,” Aveytia said. “I have learned to help the University with the budget and how to get more people and kids to want to attend games.”
There are a total of 30 individuals in the Fan Council who serve one-, two- or three-year terms, so it is a very great place to meet new people as you cheer on your favorite team together.
“I have met a lot of wonderful people who support Miner Athletics,” Aveytia said.
UTEP Athletics Fan Council meets quarterly and seeks new members yearly as the new season of UTEP sports begins. The application process for the Fan Council includes questions such as how many games were attended, season ticket history, as well as an essay of why you would be a great candidate for the UTEP Fan Council.
Aveytia explains that she tries to attend as many games as possible, surveying how they can improve fan attendance at the games or possibly any issues the department may be facing.
“We have more work to do,” Aveytia said. “I just want people to attend games and support our university.”
Applications for the 2021-2022 season are currently closed but be on the lookout as applications begin to open around late May or early June.
