To perform at one’s best mentally it often helps to work oneself physically, whether it be low impact exercise to getting oneself in tip top shape. Serving the student population is the UTEP Recreational Sports Department.
The mission statement of the Recreational Sports Department is to provide access to innovative programs, services and facilities inclusive to all UTEP students that build a balance of lifelong healthy habits with academic excellence, according to their website.
“Many students do not realize that the recreational facilities are included in their tuition as an alternative to paying for expensive gym memberships,” said Andrei Contreras a supervisor at the sports department. “Many interesting classes and trips are also available at a reasonable cost to students.”
Featuring a state-of-the-art gym and recreational fields the Recreational Department has a large selection of different exercise machines to work every muscle that one desires. An extensive cardio machine section is offered for those looking to work the legs and heart. A 1/8-mile indoor track is also available for those that want to run without aid of a treadmill.
For those seeking strength and conditioning the center has a 6,500-foot area featuring free wights for all levels and experience. Adventurers can take advantage of the 1561 square foot climbing gym which has two bouldering walls and a pinnacle climb. accommodating beginner to intermediate climbers.
Located in the main recreation center, the aquatic area features two pools a competitive and a recreational pool. The recreational pool goes from zero to 4 feet deep and has an area for basketball and volleyball. Going from a depth of just under three and a half feet to 13 feet with 10 25- meter lanes the competitive pool is for the experienced swimmer.
Multiple basketball courts, a volleyball area and even an indoor soccer area is available to groups looking for team recreation. Outdoor volleyball and soccer areas are available but must be reserved depending on schedule. University Field is available with a written request for team events and features state of the art artificial turf. There are courts available for those seeking a fast-paced game of racquetball.
Intramural sports are available in a variety of competitions including basketball, soccer, volleyball as well as many others. Classes are provided for a nominal fee for activities such as spinning, Zumba and body sculpting.
Unique trips such as white-water rafting, visits to state parks or even overnight camping are available through the semester, many will sell out quickly. All currently enrolled UTEP students can utilize the recreational facility with their Miner Card as they long as they are registered for the current semester.
