New Era Wrestling’s weekly Lucha Frontera livened up the El Paso County Coliseum with its light heavyweight tournament on July 28.
Lucha Frontera is produced by the local production company Empty Pockets. Empty Pockets, which provides New Era Wrestling a venue and also an online presence. There are different episodes and videos of the live matches on their webpage.
The bouts of the night unfolded like the hybrid of a kung-fu flick and a soap-opera. They were relentless, personal and dirty.
The first match of the night was between Mr. Bones, dressed in black leather, and the thin and jumpy La Pulga. La Pulga lost, to the dismay of the crowd, when in a moment of distraction, Mr. Bones pinned him down. Mr. Bones left the ring victorious, with insults being hurled at him.
Another match that energized the crowd was that between Flyboy and The American—a goofy version of Captain America. Although Flyboy jumped from one end of the ring to another, he was no match for the loose style and clumsy technique of The American.
After that, there was the tag team match between Black Widow, Zafiro, Delilah and a Ciudad Juárez favorite La Perrushk. The women’s match was fierce and graceful.
When Delilah tagged La Perrushk in some of the crowd cheered, while some women rooted for Zafiro as she shoved him across the ring. The fight ended with betrayal when Zafiro let her teammate Black Widow be pinned down.
The next Lucha Frontera episode will be taped on Aug. 4, at the Coliseum and will feature a championship match between Tigre del Ring and V.I.P., as well as the semifinals of the light heavyweight tournament.
