Couches, beds, Netflix and insurmountable heat, all the elements for a great staycation in sunny El Paso. A summer is only as good as its music. Here are the editors’ picks for our favorite summer songs.

“Surfin’ U.S.A. by Beach Boys
The legendary Beach Boys popped up in mind when I started thinking of summer songs. Their song “Surfin’ U.S.A” always seemed to make its way into my life when my family and I would go on vacation. “Surfin’ U.S.A” takes me to back to beaches of Los Angeles with my brothers when we were growing up. Just as the Beach Boys said, “we’ll all be gone for the summer. We’re on surfari to stay. Tell the teacher we’re surfin, surfin’ U.S.A.”

“Myth” by Beach House
This song is my go-to summer song because it always played in the background while I’m driving around during summer nights. The song talks about having a “momentary bliss” and that’s what those drives are for me.

“Summer Belles” by New Madrid
Last summer, I happened to stumble upon New Madrid on one of my Spotify ‘discover’ playlists. To my surprise, their blues-centric compositions infused with psych rock elements blended perfectly into a southern rock mesh that I found really soulful. That same year I had the chance to win a pair of tickets to their performance at the Lowbrow Palace, so this song is attached to memories of great, non-GMO and totally organic vegan food, with a healthy mix of Pabst Blue Ribbon.

“That Green Gentleman” by Panic! At the Disco
Personally, I think summer is the best season of the year because I get to spend more time with my loved ones. This song reminds me of those moments. It has an upbeat guitar rhythm and it makes me think of the happy moments. It also has a nostalgic turn to it that I love because the lyrics make you think about change; reminding me of how every summer has completely changed me, and how my life will continue to change.

“Summertime” by Vince Staples
This song truly depicts the summer as told by Vince Staples. He said he initially wrote this song when he was 13-years-old, which is bizarre in itself. This song is full of bone-chilling trails masked by a love story, “My teachers told me we were slaves, my momma told me we were kings, I don’t know who to listen to I guess we’re somewhere in between.” “Summertime” is a dark, beautiful gem that will always remind me of the summer.
