This summer the office of student life will kick off their series of Movies on the Lawn with popular, family, and cult classic films. The four movies that will be presented this year are Selena (1997), Moana (2016), Sing (2016) and the remake of Disney’s classic Beauty and the Beast (2017).
According to Event Coordinator, Malorie Garcia, these movies are big productions that are expected to draw around one-thousand viewers to sit and enjoy the late afternoon. “We’re hoping to fill up Centennial Plaza,” Garcia said.
The large crowd can be attributed to the fervent support of the community. Garcia claims that there is always a strong presence and interaction in social media, “Most people share the posters on Facebook.”
These movies were a hit at the box office and with critics. Garcia states that the quality of movies that are presented is far more important than the quantity. Movies like “Selena” and “Beauty and the Beast” are testaments of that.
Garcia believes that although “Beauty and the Beast” is a family-friendly film like “Moana” and “Sing” it can also appeal to different viewers. “The new remake can also be for college age and older folks,” Garcia said.
The movies are handpicked by what’s currently popular in the media and through a poll between the staff of the office of student life.
Movies on the Lawn will start this Friday, June 2, with “Selena” at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free and there’ll be five dollar combos of soda, popcorn, and hotdogs. It is recommended that attendees bring blankets and lawn chairs. Free parking will be provided in the Sun Bowl parking garage. No alcohol, glass containers or pets will be permitted.
