A UTEP graduate was killed on Wednesday night in an alleged hate crime in front of a bar in Kansas.
After opening fire at three men at the bar, police reported that 51-year-old Adam Purinton killed 32-year-old Srinivas Kuchibhotla, who graduated with his mater’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from UTEP in 2007.
Purinton told the group of men at the bar, “get out of my country” prior to shooting them, witnesses told the Kansas City Star. He is now charged with a count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder with a bond set at $2 million.
On behalf of his death, UTEP released a statement:
“We are shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Srinivas Kuchibhotla. He attended UTEP from 2005-2007, during which he earned a MS in Electrical Engineering and worked as a research assistant. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”
Police in Kansas refused to comment on whether or not this was a hate crime, said the local reports.
