It was an eventful weekend for junior center Matt Willms as he led the Miners on the road in back-to-back contests; thus, for his efforts, he was named Conference USA Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Willms shot an exceptional 24-of-31 from the floor (77.4 percent) and averaged 26 points this weekend. In the Miners’ 65-62 loss to Western Kentucky on Thursday, Jan. 26, Willms knocked in his career-best 27 points, including shooting 13-of-16 from the floor. It was the most scored points by a Miner this season. On Saturday Willms recorded 25 points and added seven boards as the Miners upset Marshall 91-68.
Willms and the Miners return home this week as the squad has won four of their last five games. They will host two of the league’s top teams, UAB on Thursday, Feb. 2, and Middle Tennessee, on Saturday, Feb. 4.
