In the battle between the two teams at the bottom of the barrel in Conference USA, it was Rice who prevailed 44-24 over the Miners in a game that was over by halftime. The loss puts the Miners at a 10-game losing streak in Houston and drops them to 3-8 overall this year (1-6 C-USA).
The Miners were absolutely dominated after their first field goal of the game, which was their largest lead of the game, 3-0. The Owls scored 34 unanswered points in the first half. They held the very unproductive Miners to only 42 yards in the first half. Standout running back Aaron Jones was held to just 31 yards.
Ryan Metz completed 19-of-34 passes for 169 yards, two touchdowns and a pick, which was taken for a touchdown. Jones finished the game with 75 rushing yards and a receiving touchdown. Linebacker Alvin Jones led the way for the Miners with 16 total tackles, while Dante Lovilette contributed with nine tackles.
After Rice’s quarterback Tyler Stehling was knocked out of the game, the Owls’ backup quarterback Jackson Tyner came in and destroyed the Miners. He completed 18-of-25 passes for two touchdowns and 196 total yards.
Prior to the month of November, the Owls had been 1-8 throughout the season. Next up, the Miners will return home on Saturday, Nov. 26, to take on the North Texas Mean Green to close out their season.
