El Paso Chihuahuas’ Hunter Renfroe brought the Padres’ organization their first Most Valuable Player award in 27 years. Renfroe was voted the 80th MVP in Pacific Coast League history, which was announced Thursday, Sept. 1.
After securing two-thirds votes from field managers and media representatives, Renfroe joins Sandy Alomar Jr. (1989), Kevin McReynolds (1983), and Timothy Pyznarski (1986) as the only affiliates in Padres’ history to win the award.
Through the majority of the season, Renfroe led all of the league in home runs. He knocked 29 over the wall, and leads Triple-A in extra-base hits (68) and total bases (290). On the track he is going, Renfroe needs only one more home run to become only the fourth player in Minor League Baseball to hit 30 home runs and 100 RBI’s.
Renfroe and the Chihuahuas start their playoff pursuit on Sept. 7, as they play in the first Conference Championship in Southwest University Park.
